Position Description:
The selected participant will work as part of a 4-6 person team of field biologists whose jobs is to set out, maintain, and collect data from remotely triggered cameras and hair snares, assessing if the fisher (Pekania pennanti) is restored to Olympic National Park and surrounding lands. The fisher crew works in teams of 2 to 3 people who work for 7-8 days in the field – both in roaded and unroaded areas of the Olympic Peninsula. Many sites are access via overnight backpacking trips and off-trail hiking. Backpacking trips can last up to 7 days, and each field tour starts and ends with time in the office. The crew follows an established protocol that was developed for use in the Park, and that we have been using successfully for 2 years. Crew responsibilities also include inputting data into our established database. Crew members interact with members of the Park staff, project partners from other federal, state and tribal entities, park visitors, and students. All members are able to, and occasionally called on to communicate the project’s mission, methods and goals in verbal form. The work is coordinated by a team lead, and directly supervised by the Park’s lead biologist. Duties require that the participant work outdoors for extended periods during inclement weather. The participant will be required to: 1) hike long daily distances (up to 15 miles on trails and up to 4 miles cross-country) through forested and mountainous terrain with a backpack weighing 50 pounds; 2) work on extended trips to locate and survey animals; 3) work very closely with others on extended field trips; and 4) navigate to plots off trail through difficult terrain, dense vegetation, and river crossings. The Mosaics in Science Program is run in partnership with the National Park Service and The Geological Society of America.
