Position Description:
Independent Project (60%). Inventory vegetation in park forest. Inventory and map priority invasive forest species as well as native forest species susceptible to encroaching pests (emerald ash borer), providing park managers with the information necessary to control and manage new pest species and develop a proactive management strategy. Data will be entered into a park database and species maps will be created that link with existing meadow survey data to provide a complete picture of the plant communities within Valley Forge NHP. The participant will build off of work conducted by a previous Mosaics in Science participant, using standardized survey method and protocol, gathering and recording data, using GPS technology to map species, assisting with invasive species management and control, and other field work. Standardized, repeatable survey protocols, a comprehensive species database with maps, and a final report describing priority areas for treatment will be the final products for this project. Non-native Plant and Animal Management (20%). Work with park staff and summer crews to control invasive, non-native plant species, remove the non-native, invasive Rusty Crayfish from Valley Creek using nets, collect and enter data, and implement quality assurance/quality control procedures; and may work with the NPS-Exotic Plant Management Team. Wildlife and Water Management (10%). Contribute to the collection of data related to white-tailed deer, participate in the maintenance and care of plants in the park greenhouse, conduct condition assessments of protective fencing within forests and along riparian buffers and make necessary repairs, install and maintain fencing to protect rare plant populations, implement conservation projects, assist with the collection of water quality monitoring data, participate in river clean-up days and other organized events. Work with regional teams to monitor wildlife. Natural Resource Interpretation (5%). Contribute to development of park informational brochures on natural resources and prepare and present information about park natural resources or independent project results. Park Planning (5%). Opportunities to attend and participate in a variety of planning efforts related to natural resources (e.g. Valley Creek partnership meetings), participate in meetings with resource professionals, and assist with filing, photocopying, and general office organization (limited).
