Position Description:
The GeoCorps participant will be involved in the ongoing development of the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network (NCBN) geomorphological monitoring protocols and data collection. In 2010, the Network developed a protocol to monitor coastal dune and beach topography in a number of parks. Methods are being tested and pilot data collected at Gateway National Recreation Area and Fire Island National Seashore. The participant will be trained in field data collection using the NCBN monitoring protocols, and will assist NCBN scientists to evaluate existing data, as well as process and import new data into ArcMAP, to produce maps/shapefiles. The position will include both an office and field component. A primary goal of the NCBN coastal geomorphology program is to provide information to park managers and to improve the understanding of the dynamic nature of coastlines. These data will be used in management decisions and in describing the condition of marine and coastal areas. The GeoCorps participant will take part in developing and providing this information to park managers. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
