Position Description:
Bryce Canyon National Park was established due to its unique geological features, particularly its rock spires called hoodoos. Situated at the top of the Grand Staircase, Bryce Canyon National Park and the surrounding area provides a spectacular outdoor geology classroom. Over 1.5 million people from around the world visit Bryce each year and each visitor has a common question, “how did this spectacular display of geological features form?” The 2015 GeoCorps Interpretive Intern will be involved in interpretation and presentation of Bryce’s unique geology to visitors. The GeoCorp intern will work closely with the park’s Physical Scientist, Geologist, and Educational Outreach Specialist to develop visitor interpretive programs, interpretive walks, and geology educational programs for the park’s younger visitors. Additionally, the GeoCorp intern may assist a GeoCorp Research Intern, with field work measuring stratigraphic sections, and measuring and documenting conjugate fracture sets within the Claron Formation in order to develop a better understanding of hoodoo development. Each year, in late July, Bryce Canyon National Park hosts a 2-day Geology Festival to highlight the geology of the park and surrounding area. Presenters from nearby national and state parks and national forest feature maintain information booths and provide activities to highlight their particular geological resources. In addition, Bryce Canyon National Park organizes various geology activity stations for young people; and hosts a variety of guest speakers. The GeoCorp Intern will be expected to prepare a geology activity program for youths and to assist in the organizing of the geology festival. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service's Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
