Position Description:
The GeoCorps participant will work as an Education Specialist at the Mount Rainier National Park Education Center. The participant will prepare and present educational programs to school groups and teachers describing the compelling geologic features and processes at work on Mount Rainier: volcanism, glaciology, stream aggradations, etc. Mount Rainier is an ideal place to interpret climate change, and programs also contain a component on geological hazards, especially lahars. These educational field activities will be presented to a variety of grade levels, primarily grades 3 – 8. Most programs will be hands-on field studies. The participant will also create their own geology lesson plans as well as integrate existing lessons from the Living with a Volcano in Your Backyard USGS curriculum guides in both classroom and field settings. Classroom presentations may also occur in schools and generally last about an hour. Field studies usually last 2-4 hours and may occur on snowshoes, in difficult weather conditions and steep terrain and at elevations above 5000 feet. The participant will also instruct prepared activities of ecology, history and other content areas. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. The GeoCorps position will be based at the Mount Rainier National Park Education Center at the park's headquarters. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) Program.
