Position Description:
The participant will assist park geologists and hydrologists in examining sediment transport and discharge at Mount Rainier National Park. Mount Rainier monitors stream flow in many locations, including the Nisqually River at Longmire, Paradise River, Ohanapecosh River, Klickitat Creek, Tahoma Creek and others. This project will have an exclusive focus on the Nisqually River but will also include work in other streams across the park. The Nisqually River at Longmire has recently had an installation of a real-time stream gage and turbidity meter, and we would like to be able to determine not only water discharge, but sediment transport in this reach as it ties into overall park aggradation rates. The successful applicant will work with other scientists and geoscience interns in the park. The participant will examine ways of tracking glacial velocity via remotely sensed data and feature tracking with aerial photos. There may be a field component to check the validity of remotely sensed data which would require trips to the Nisqually Glacier to track velocities using GPS or surveying instruments. There is also potential to work on other projects at the park, including topographic surveys of river cross sections, assisting other seasonal staff with geomorphic analyses in other locations in the park, assisting with field measurements of stream discharge and other duties as assigned. The Mosaics in Science Program is run in partnership with the National Park Service and The Geological Society of America.
