Position Description:
Over 12 weeks, the participant will utilize GIS data such as aerial imagery and regional vector data to analyze the expansion of oil and gas operations that are affecting the quality of night skies in the park. Guadalupe Mountains National Park has historically had some of the finest views of night skies in the United States due to it's high elevation and remote location; however, increased oil and gas production in Texas and New Mexico has resulted in more light pollution. The participant will be assigned to analyze the history of this development to quantify and interpret the effect this increase in production has had on the visibility and clarity of celestial objects. In addition to using GIS to analyze the oil and gas development, the intern will establish a base station monitoring camera to chronicle the continuous development of oil and gas platforms that consist of bright lights and gas flares. The camera will also be used to analyze which night sky objects fade or disappear due to light pollution. This is a Mosaics in Science position. The Mosaics in Science Program is run in partnership with the National Park Service and The Geological Society of America.
