Position Description:
We are looking for individuals to do research in geology or paleontology, focusing on resources from federal lands in eastern Oregon. Proposed research should relate to broad topics, such as Cenozoic volcanism, tectonics, climate change, and evolution. Recent GeoCorps researchers at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument have done diverse projects, including studies of 1) the response of mammals to mid Miocene climate and habitat changes, 2) the impacts of Oligocene volcanic events on extinction rates, 3) systematics and biostratigraphy of oreodonts, and 4) detailed geologic and stratigraphic mapping of the Sheep Rock unit of the monument. The guest scientist position will include both independently led field and office work. The Thomas Condon Paleontology Center at the Sheep Rock Unit of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument will serve as office, laboratory, museum collection, and field base for research. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
