Position Description:
The participant will assist with field and office work for Denali's long term glacier monitoring program. Glaciers have been monitored by the NPS in Denali since 1991 with a long history of research. Monitoring on the ground is conducted with mass balance measurements on two index glaciers, while a select sample of other glaciers are surveyed for terminus and surface elevation changes every few years. Comparative photography plays in important role in documenting changes. Recent geospatial datasets (satellite imagery, DEM, glacier inventory) have recently allowed for an assessment of glacier change across the park. For an overview of the program and past results see this report: https://irma.nps.gov/App/Reference/DownloadDigitalFile?code 501088&file CAKN_GlacierReport_2013_Final.pdf The participant will assist with ground-based work using a survey grade GPS, digital photography, measurement of ablation stakes, and note taking. In addition, the participant will be asked to document human impacts to Wilderness while traveling in the back country. Office work includes organizing and summarizing data, GPS data post processing, GIS database management and development, creating maps, and assisting with report creation. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
