Position Description:
Denali National Park and Preserve seeks a Geoheritage Education/Interpretation Technician to help facilitate Denali’s signature youth and interpretive programs as well as develop new outreach and campground programs. They will perform in-person educational programs for young visitors/school groups, provide orientation and safety information to visitors at the visitor center, and rove/hike park trails to make informal visitor contacts. Additionally, the participant will help instruct one or more week-long, science-focused summer camps for local kids. During project time, the participant will help oversee the park’s Junior Ranger, Discovery Pack, and Murie Science and Learning Center (MSLC) Kids Corner programs, including re-stocking booklets and materials as needed. There will also be opportunities to shadow and learn about different divisions within the Park Service and assist with developing science content for the Denali and MSLC websites. The position will be fun and educational, and Denali is a breathtaking place to spend a summer. While the position will not be explicitly geology-focused, there will be plenty of opportunities to make all disciplines of park science come alive for young people. The participant will be based at the MSLC or the Denali Visitor Center (DVC), which both are located at the entrance of Denali. The MSLC provides scientists and the public with research, discovery and learning opportunities in Alaska’s arctic and subarctic National Parks. The mission of the organization is to facilitate and disseminate research that promotes appreciation and caring for our natural and cultural heritage. The DVC is the main summer visitor center. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) Program.
