Position Description:
DEADLINE: MARCH 6, 2016. Assist in the collection of natural resource, geologic and recreational user information to support agency decision making (NEPA) on the development of a comprehensive recreational mineral collecting policy for the Forest as well as site specific management plans. The selected individual will need strong analytical, field and personal skills to assist permanent staff in the development of a proposed action. Some of the typical work will include field visits, using existing information to develop a scoping report, using ARCGIS to make maps from existing data sets and developing outreach information for the public. The selected individual will also be contacting current users to determine their preferences for development. Can expect to visit other mineral collection sites on the WMNF and participate in their administration. Will have an opportunity to participate in other activities typical on the Saco Ranger District, WMNF including recreation management, trail maintenance and Visitor Information Services. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service.

Goals, outcomes, and deliverables:
At the close of the work period the unit will have in its possession a draft scoping report concerning the proposed action. This will include a map showing the relevant geologic, natural resource and recreation infrastructure issues in the area. A summary of user interests and concerns. A proposal, with alternatives, for developing specific collecting areas that also identifies areas that should be rehabilitated. All information is organized for further use by Forest Specialists.

Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.):
The participant will be located at the Saco Ranger District and will work daily with program staff on the district. The intern will work daily with the Forest minerals technician and have access to other resource staff on site including GIS, NEPA and recreation. Opportunities to interact with other staff areas and gain exposure to a variety of resource management issues will be available. Additional mentoring will be provided by the Minerals Program Leader.

Professional development & learning opportunities: (trainings, certifications, networking, etc.):
The mentor will discuss career interests with the intern prior to the start date to identify other resource areas or training appropriate to career goals. Career options include Forest-wide or team meetings, job shadowing, exposure to research at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest and networking with Forest Service partners. If the intern's work can be used to meet academic or professional requirements the participant will be offered additional advice or information to support this.
