Position Description:
The Geocorps participant will work in the Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Program for the Royal Gorge Field Office. Specifically, the applicant will serve as an assistant to the Lake Fork Watershed Working Group (LFWWG) in Leadville, Colorado. The LFWWG formed in 2000 in response to EPA and CDPHE investigations that revealed impairments to water quality and aquatic habitat in the Lake Fork of the Arkansas River Watershed. LFWWG membership includes: BLM, Colorado Mountain College (Leadville Campus), U.S. Geological Survey, Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety, Trout Unlimited, Private Landowners, EPA, CDPHE. The proponent will assist the working group with writing reports (319 grant watershed plan update and assistance with finalizing planning documents for removal actions). Proponent will also be responsible for coordinating meetings for the working group; data organization; field work coordination; assistance with restoration efforts at Lake Fork sites; assistance with water quality and aquatic sampling and analysis; and sample preparation and analysis in the Timberline Analytical Laboratory. The position will support the BLM but will primarily be housed at the Colorado Mountain College Campus in Leadville, Colorado and will be supervised by the Natural Resource Management Program. This position is offered through the Geological Society of Americas's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management.

Several reports (319 grant watershed plan update, Watershed Monitoring and Maintenance documents, assistance with updating national AML database)

Oversight of the project will be provided by one of the project leads in the Natural Resources Management group at the Colorado Mountain College in Leadville, CO.

Professional development & learning opportunities: (trainings, certifications, networking, etc.):
All training required to perform the tasks required of the position will be provided through either the BLM or CMC staff. CMC would provide training related to sampling, field work, and chemistry lab duties. BLM would provide background related to the BLM's management of the abandoned mine land program.

Physical/Natural Environment:
The Royal Gorge Resource Area encompasses the eastern half of Colorado. The geology of the Resource Area ranges from the oil and gas producing formations of the high plains to hydrothermal gold deposits of Leadville. The terrain changes with the geology from flat grasslands to the steep, uneven terrain of the high mountains, but rolling hills with uneven terrain are dominant. Summer temperatures in Colorado can be very hot at lower elevations and cool at higher elevations. Summer temperatures in Leadville, CO range from an average high of 65° – 75° and a low of 35° - 45°. Conditions at all elevations can change in an instant due to afternoon thunderstorms.

Work Environment:
The participant will work out of the Colorado Mountain College, Leadville Campus located in Leadville, Colorado. The position will include approximately 30% computer and 70% field work and will require working with CMC Natural Resource Management faculty and staff but work will be mostly independent

Qualifications:
Student must be enrolled in or a recent graduate from a geological sciences, environmental sciences, or related program. Any background with mining or AML is considered favorable. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.

Position Duration: 12 weeks

Hourly Wage: $4,848

Housing Details:
The participant will be responsible for finding her/his own housing and will be given a housing allowance of $2,000 to cover the 12-week position, in addition to the stipend. Housing in the area is relatively inexpensive. A personal vehicle will be required as there is no public transportation available in Leadville and there is limited housing within walking distance of the office.
