Position Description:
Manassas National Battlefield Park preserves areas of in situ paleontological resources throughout its 5,000 acres. During a paleontological survey in 2009, recommendations were made to help the battlefield protect, monitor, and interpret these resources. The paleontological report delineated certain areas that would be excellent natural laboratories for high school or college field trips, stating that “Students could measure a stratigraphic column (describing rock units and their thickness), describe different types of rocks, investigate the mudcracks to determine their origin or examine the root marks, calcrete and paleosols.” The report also suggested developing a fact sheet on the rocks and other features (mudcracks, root marks, calcrete, etc.) found there, and performing periodic visits to photo document the condition of those resources. In response to these recommendations, a Geoscientist-In-the-Park would communicate the significance of our geologic resources by developing interpretive outreach materials for the general public and for youth engagement. The materials produced will describe the geology of the park and, in part, how it impacted the historic events that occurred here and shaped the natural communities. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) Program.
