Position Description:
This position involves assisting with the inventory and monitoring of natural soundscapes in Denali National Park and Preserve. By studying the location, frequency and severity of motorized noise, park managers can understand the condition of wilderness resources such as solitude and intact natural ecosystems. Field work for this position focuses on automated sound monitoring stations: they will be prepared, tested, deployed, maintained, and removed throughout the course of the 2015 field season. A large portion of the tasks related to this position will be in the office, related to analyzing large volumes of acoustic data and learning how sound can be used as information for Denali's leadership team and the public. Careful annotation of ecological observations from sound clips will be a large part of work time, as well as assisting with reporting. The applicant will work on these tasks as part of a small team of 2 - 3 that deals with soundscape issues for the entire NPS Alaska Region. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service's Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
