Position Description:
These positions (2) will contribute to long-term monitoring of vegetation communities by the Klamath Inventory and Monitoring Network (KLMN) of the National Park Service. Monitoring is performed by two 3-person NPS crews, each of which will be composed of a crew lead, a biotechnician, and a GeoCorp participant. Crews will drive and hike (navigating by GPS and field maps) to selected sites in each park, which fall into three categories: Riparian, (within 20m of perennial streams); High elevation, (above a certain elevation threshold in each park); and Matrix, (remaining areas). Crews will be trained in basic field sampling techniques and put these skills to use in sampling all categories of sites. Once the crew navigates to the field sites, crews establish a 20x50m (0.1ha) plot, based on previously placed rebar. Crews collect a diverse suite of vegetation community data: vascular plant identification to species, species percent cover, litter, duff and down woody debris (fuels), photos, and tree measurements (tree height, canopy class and condition, etc.). Field data are collected and entered into databases using tablet PCs, and crews learn about and follow established data quality assurance and control (QA/QC) procedures. The incumbents will learn about the techniques, background, safety, logistics, and science needed to implement a long-term monitoring program for protected natural areas– and how that information is used for park management and resource protection. The project will start in Whiskeytown NRA, and crews will sample and visit sites at Whiskeytown for approximately 8 weeks, after which the crews transfer to Lassen Volcanic NP for the remainder of the field season. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) Program. There are two positions available under this description at this location during this season. To be considered for any of these positions a candidate needs to submit an application for this one.

If you have questions about the application and selection process, please contact GSA's GeoCorps managers.  If you have questions about any aspect of the position — description, qualifications, housing, dates — please direct them to the contact(s) listed in the project description.
