Position Description:
The participant will research the current distribution and abundance of special status bat species in select riparian areas. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is home to seventeen bat species of which seven are listed as special status species in Arizona and Utah. Bats are key indicators of the health of our national parks and ultimately the environment and its biodiversity. That being said, GLCA has limited knowledge about the current distribution and abundance of bats within the park. The participant will collect field data on bat populations by deploying an acoustic bat detector at four locations last sampled in 1994 by Bogan and Ramotnik. The participant will be tasked with collecting, processing, analyzing, and reporting the field data results; developing a park webpage and brochure focused on bat education and conservation; and conducting interpretive talks on this research at GLCA and the university attended by the intern. The participant will be tasked with recruiting and involving local citizen scientists in this effort. This is a great opportunity for the participant, park staff, and citizen scientists to work together to better understand bats, their habitats, and threats facing these key species. This is a Mosaics in Science position. The Mosaics in Science Program is run in partnership with the National Park Service and The Geological Society of America.
