Position Description:
This Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) position will interpret, and create maps and digital products from SEKI’s Geographic Information System (GIS) Geologic Resources Inventory (GRI) data set for the purposes of making the data accessible to park staff. The GRI dataset includes 390 geologic units sorted into 21 feature classes and data layers. The GIP will work directly with the park’s hydrologist and GIS specialists to access the data to produce additional geologic map products and GIS layer files, make them accessible through the park’s Geospatial Data Warehouse, and provide informative presentations to park staff on how to access and use this valuable data. Additionally, the GIP will research, describe, and geolocate the abandoned mine lands within SEKI. Work includes researching mining claims within the parks’ and counties’ archives, recording the transfer of the claims, associating coordinates to the claims, and if possible locating abandoned mines in the field. The GIP will use knowledge of mineral associations along with the GRI dataset to assist locating historic mine sites. In the field, the GIP will use knowledge of historic mine operations to identify and map adits, spoils, historic equipment, and other associated features. The GIP will work directly with the park’s interpreter staff to facilitate understanding the geology of the park and develop materials that will assist staff to explain the park’s geology and mining history to its visitors. The GIP will work with the parks’ museum curator to create a permanent archive of SEKI mining history, and the parks’ cultural branch to identify and catalog historic mining artifacts. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
