Position Description:
This position will focus on updating documentation related to caves, development and facilitation of cave restoration, and assisting with finalizing a cave management plan for Coronado National Memorial (CORO). This position will assist with update of cave documentation by synthesizing existing data sets, shapefiles, photographs, paper and digital maps, and archival records related to the Memorial’s caves into GIS; drafting new cave maps as needed. The participant will coordinate restoration work at Coronado Cave, the most significant cave feature at CORO. Coronado Cave is the only cave at CORO currently open to the public. In recent years, the cave has suffered littering, graffiti, and other vandalism activities. The participant will document graffiti and other disturbances within the cave and facilitate restoration activities utilizing volunteers and NPS staff. A draft cave management plan was developed in 2009, but was not completed. Since 2009, several hazards or threats have surfaced requiring expansion on the original draft (e.g. White-Nose Syndrome, recent graffiti, and endangered bat species). The primary role of the GeoCorps participant will be to help finalize the plan utilizing current standards, incorporating updated documentation, and cave restoration planning. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
