Position Description:
The participant will be involved in the ongoing development of the Coronado National Memorial (CORO) Cave Stewardship Strategy and projects related to inventory, monitoring, and management of cave and karst resources. This position will assist with update of cave documentation by synthesizing existing data sets, shapefiles, photographs, paper and digital maps, and archival records related to the Memorial’s caves into GIS; and drafting new cave maps as needed. The participant will coordinate restoration work at Coronado Cave, the most significant cave feature at CORO. In recent years, the cave has suffered littering, graffiti, and other vandalism activities. The participant will document graffiti and other disturbances within the cave and facilitate restoration activities utilizing volunteers and NPS staff. A draft cave management plan was developed in 2009, but was not completed. Since 2009, several hazards or threats have surfaced requiring expansion on the original draft (e.g. White-Nose Syndrome, recent graffiti, and endangered bat species). The primary role of the Guest Scientist will be to help finalize a new cave stewardship strategy utilizing current standards, incorporating updated documentation and cave restoration planning. Primary project goals for the Guest Scientist include conducting cave and general geologic research, providing information to park managers, and to improve the understanding of cave and karst resources in the memorial. The position will include both an office and field component. This position is offered through a partnership between the Geological Society of America and the National Park Service’s Geologist-In-Park Science Program.
