Position Description:
Lava Beds National Monument encompasses a unique geologic environment of volcanic upheaval, both above and below ground. The science that takes place focuses heavily on the physical sciences, and specifically on volcanic and lava tube cave environments. The participant will work within the Natural Resources Division of Lava Beds National Monument. He/she will support several projects. 1. Provide science communication support for the park staff and local communities. This will involve working with the Interpretive Division to train their staff on science projects and methods taking place within the park and ways it can be incorporated within their regularly scheduled programs. The participant will also give several science communication programs to park visitors and will be available to visit local schools as well. The goal is to increase public and local awareness as to the real science taking place in Lava Beds and the ways it influences resource management. This will comprise 25-50% of the internship. 2. Support the NPS Science and Research program through the follow-up of recently completed research projects. The intern will locate, organize, and communicate selected results from the wealth of interdisciplinary research that has been completed at Lava Beds over the past five years. He/she will have the opportunity to choose from sixty research projects focused on topics such as climate influence on fire severity and forest dynamics, cave invertebrate biodiversity and seasonality, cave mapping and morphology, cave ice level monitoring, cave microbe identification and population analysis, bat population dynamics and pesticide loading, land bird monitoring, pika habitat identification and population monitoring, butterfly census, and lichen identification. This will comprise 25-50% of the internship. 3. The participant will support various management processes and decisions as they relate to natural resources; such as those relating to the monument’s wildlife and plant phenology monitoring programs. As with the use of research results, this will also help the participant better understand how science shapes management decisions for use in science communications. Field work will be approximately 25% of the internship. The Mosaics in Science Program is run in partnership with the National Park Service and The Geological Society of America.
