Position Description:
El Malpais National Monument, an hour's drive west of Albuquerque, New Mexico, comprises more than 114,000 acres of rugged volcanic wilderness dotted with ancient conifers. Its basalt flows created numerous lava tube caves, some containing perennial ice deposits. The monument is still in the process of understanding the dynamic processes that produce this unique cave ice, and needs your help to research and manage it. Therefore this position would have both in-office and field duties, to organize and digitize existing ice monitoring data from a variety of sources, and perform field surveys, ice photo-monitoring, and cave mapping. Duties will be split evenly between these indoor and outdoor tasks, or as weather and workloads require. Come explore our caves and lava flows, and help us build our cave and cave ice management program.
