Position Description:
This position will serve as a liaison between the National Park Service (NPS) - Paleontology Program and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) - Department of Paleobiology. The paleontology intern will foster and support scientific, curatorial and educational collaboration between the NPS and NMNH relative to paleontological resources and fossil collections. The participant will coordinate with both NPS and museum staff to inventory and research NPS fossil collections from dozens of parks, representing more than 100 years of fieldwork. The position will also provide support to parks requesting information pertaining to NPS fossil collections held by the NMNH. The intern will develop brief summary reports outlining the scientific and historical information relative to NPS fossil collections at the NMNH. Important archival documents or photographic archives will be scanned and maintained as an electronic archive for NPS fossil collections held by the NMNH. The paleontology intern will also assist the NPS and NMNH with the coordination of the National Fossil Day (NFD) partnership and the planning for the 2015 NFD Celebration in the Nation's Capital. This includes the development of media / social media to communicate information and news related to NFD activities and events. The Mosaics in Science Program is run in partnership with the National Park Service and The Geological Society of America.
