Position Description:
The Forest is seeking a highly motivated applicant who’s interested in a diverse job experience this summer. There are 3 aspects to this position: (1) host and public services at a popular geologic site; (2) inventory of abandoned mine sites located across the Forest; and (3) creating interpretive information on the unique geologic features of the area. One-third of the time will be spent at Crystal Park, a unique recreation area at 7,800 feet elevation in the Pioneer Mountains of southwest Montana and is open to the public for digging quartz crystals. The host position involves assisting visitors, maintaining the facilities and ensuring rules and regulations are followed. One-third of the time will be spent assisting in abandoned mine reclamation. Work includes site inspections, compiling information, monitoring bat populations and assisting with abandoned mine land closures. The remaining time will be spent developing education programs describing the unique geologic features of the Forest. The participant may also assist with other Forest Service inventory, monitoring, office and field work.

Goals, outcomes, and deliverables:
The goals of this position are to implement the Forest’s mineral and geology program goals. Specifically in 2015 this includes providing public services at Crystal Park, reclaiming abandoned mines, and developing public information about unique geologic resources of the Forest.

Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.):
Professional mineral/geology specialists and recreation specialists will work closely with the participant. This position is offered through a partnership between the Geological Society of America and the U.S. Forest Service.

By completing these projects, the intern will gain a wide variety of valuable skills, including further developing skills as a geologist, public speaking skills, inventory and monitoring, and gain necessary skills to apply the knowledge gained in college to practical situations in the field.

Physical/Natural Environment:
The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest covers 3.35 million acres and lies in eight Southwest Montana counties. The forest has one of the most diverse land bases in Montana. It is unique in that is connects three of the most intact large ecosystems in the lower forty-eight states.

Work Environment:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Work involves standing for long periods of time, walking over rough and uneven terrain, lifting and bending and at times sitting at a desk. Time will be split between Crystal Park, the office setting in Dillon, and field work.

Qualifications:
Applicant should have or be working toward a degree in geology, anthropology, geology, environmental science, natural resources or other related field. Undergraduate, graduate and recent graduates are welcome to apply. Applicants must have the ability and desire to interact with the public and a desire to share knowledge of geology with a diverse visiting public. Public speaking experience is desired. The applicant must have a valid driver’s license. The participant should be able to work independently, as well as in a group setting. The ideal applicant will have a good sense of humor, strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work with a variety of people.

The forest provides timber, minerals, and grazing lands. It also offers breath-taking scenery for a wide variety of recreational pursuits. The forest has incredible mountain ranges, mountain lakes, great fishing rivers and streams, and wildlife abounds. The Forest contains a variety of habitats, ranging from timbered mountains and jagged granite peaks to open rolling sagebrush expanses. Southwest Montana is known for outstanding elk hunting and blue ribbon trout streams. More information is available at www.fs.fed.us/r1/b-d. Dillon is located in the southwest corner of Montana and surrounded on three sides by the Continental Divide. Outdoor recreation dominates the area with hundreds of miles of hiking and snowmobile trails, digging for crystals or panning for gold, visiting ghost towns and some of the West's best fisheries. Summer temperatures average 85 degrees, with occasional isolated afternoon thunderstorms.

Position Dates:
Approximately mid-June through mid-August, 2015, with some flexibility

Position Duration: 12 weeks

Hourly Wage: $2,750

Housing Details:
