Position Description:
The participant will be involved with the ongoing abandoned mine land (AML) inventory on the Umpqua National Forest. Duties will include: - Using old maps of mine features and old mining publications as a starting point for the inventory. - Identify and inventory abandoned mine features out on the ground using a Trimble Juno GPS. Photograph any new sites. - Update AML shapefile/database with new sites. - Identify sites that are safety concerns to the public and should be considered in our AML closure plan. - Inspect previously closed AML sites for vandalism. - Begin the Environmental Analysis process by preparing a project initiation report for the District Ranger's signature which identifies the AML sites to be closed. Other work possibilities include designing interpretive signs for geologic sites, mapping geology in rockpits and inspecting rockhounding sites.

Reports, maps, and shapefiles with photos and locations of AML sites.

Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.):
The participant will be working with the Geologist for the Umpqua National Forest and other experienced Forest minerals and geology staff. The first couple of weeks, Forest staff will be working with the participant in the field for training to make sure they understand their task and to get familiar with the Forest.

Professional development & learning opportunities: (trainings, certifications, networking, etc.):
The agency staff will work with the participant to ensure that all necessary and relevant Forest Service trainings are completed. The participant will also be invited to participate in any other career development opportunities such as minerals/geology meetings, trainings, field visits, projects, etc. The goal is to get the participant a wide diversity of experience working with the Forest Service so that they can determine whether a career working in the Federal Government is something that they are interested in.

Work Environment:
This position will mostly consist of field work with some office work. The position includes working alone and hiking in remote areas in steep terrain. Most of the District/Forest has poor to no cell phone coverage. Participant will be supplied with a FS radio to be used in the event of an emergency

Qualifications:
- Applicant should have or be working toward a degree in geology, or other related field. - Applicants should be able to work in the field with little supervision. - Applicant will be doing majority of the field work alone, so being comfortable in the woods alone is a high priority. - Applicant must be able to drive on gravel roads, sometimes in 4 wheel drive. - Applicant must have basic computer skills and be proficient with Microsoft Office programs. Knowledge of ArcGIS would be preferable. - The position involves outdoor work in all kinds of weather, hiking in rugged terrain and must be in good physical shape. - A private car is necessary for transportation to and from work, and to the grocery store. Housing for this position is approximately 20 miles from the nearest full service town as well as duty station. - Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.

Vehicle / Driver's License Requirement (If applicable):
- A government vehicle will be supplied for use in the field.

Position Dates:
June 15 - September 5, 2015, with somewhat flexible start/end dates

Position Duration: 12 weeks

Hourly Wage: $2,750

Housing Details:
Free housing will be provided by the Forest Service at no cost to the participant. Housing is in a shared house at our Layng Creek Work Center facility approx. 20 miles from town. It is a three bedroom house with five beds so two tenants of the same gender may be required to share a bedroom.
