Position Description:
APPLICATIONS ARE STILL BEING ACCEPTED FOR THIS SUMMER OPPORTUNITY. The position will provide assistance in implementing the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM) Assessment, Inventory and Monitoring (AIM) project, Phase 3, based on BLM's national AIM strategy (see BLM Information Bulletin 2012-080 and its attachments for further information on AIM www.blm.gov/wo/st/en/info/regulations/Instruction_Memos_and_Bulletins/national_information/2012/IB_2012-080.html). The project was initiated in 2013, continued in 2014, and will continue again in 2015. The successful candidate will work directly with a seasonal field crew from the Great basin Institute (GBI) and assist the GSENM project lead in planning and coordinating the project among GBI, local, state and national BLM offices and others, and with other duties associated with the project (such as assisting GBI and the BLM project lead with data handling). This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management.

Goals, outcomes, and deliverables:
The project will provide the successful candidate with experience in public land management, in particular planning and executing land health and aquatic resource assessments based on BLM's national Assessment, Inventory and Monitoring (AIM) strategy.

Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.):
The successful candidate will work directly with GBI and GSENM professional staff and a GBI field crew under the oversight of the GSENM AIM project lead.

Professional development & learning opportunities: (trainings, certifications, networking, etc.):
There will be substantive involvement of BLM professionals that will work daily side by side with recipient to provide project orientation and hands-on training. BLM staff and recipient will meet regularly (at least weekly) to discuss progress and track project outcomes and review any training needs.

Physical/Natural Environment:
Located in southern Utah’s red rock country, GSENM includes ecosystems varying from low-lying desert to ponderosa pine and aspen forests. Kanab is a small historic town close to the AZ border within the “grand circle” of national parks. Virtually unlimited recreational opportunities are available.

Work Environment:
Mostly field work in challenging conditions (remote, difficult to access, prolonged exposure to hot and dry conditions with occasional thunderstorms and possibility of flash flooding; requires extensive hiking over rough terrain and camping); occasional office work associated with the project

Qualifications:
--knowledge of general ecological principles and their application to land health (ecological condition/integrity) assessment and monitoring --knowledge and/or experience in rangeland/arid land/semi-arid land ecology and/or management preferred --knowledge of landscape ecological principles --knowledge and/or experience in their application to multi-scale ecological condition/integrity assessment preferred --knowledge of sampling design; knowledge and/or experience in multi-scale sampling design preferred --knowledge of basic inferential statistics (ANOVA, etc.) --knowledge and/or experience with multivariate statistics and/or multi-scale analysis preferred --knowledge of soils, especially NRCS soils mapping and ecological site descriptions --strong computer skills, especially in GIS; experience in use of spatial analysis preferred Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.

Position Duration: 12 weeks

Hourly Wage: $3,000

Housing Details:
Successful candidate will be responsible for organizing their own housing, although BLM will assist. A housing allowance will be provided.
