Position Description:
[DEADLINE FOR THIS POSITION EXTENDED TO 3/29/15] The Geocorps participant will primarily be responsible for reviewing, editing, updating and finalizing a Draft Mineral Potential Report that covers the Royal Gorge Field Office (RGFO) area, which consists of the eastern half of Colorado. The principle objective of this job is to finalize an existing Draft Mineral Potential Report, so that it can be effectively used in decision making within the field office and eventually be incorporated into the Resource Management Plan (RMP) revision process for the office. Duties will include professionally editing a scientific document, professionally evaluating the mineral potential of the area within RGFO (in accordance with BLM standards and policies) and finalizing a scientific document that will be used for both planning and industrial purposes. GIS data interpretation, editing and updating will also be needed, as it relates to the report. Additional duties may include coordination with other government or industrial entities and providing support for various training and/or educational events in the Minerals Programs. This position will require a brief training by BLM personnel to become familiar with the project, existing information and BLM expectations. This position will last for 12 weeks (3 months).

Oversight of the project will be provided by one of the project leads in the BLM Royal Gorge Field Office.

Physical/Natural Environment:
The Royal Gorge Resource Area encompasses the eastern half of Colorado. The geology of the Resource Area ranges from the oil and gas producing formations of the high plains to hydrothermal gold deposits of Leadville. The terrain changes with the geology from flat grasslands to the steep, uneven terrain of the high mountains, but rolling hills with uneven terrain are dominant. Summer temperatures in Colorado can be very hot at lower elevations but conditions can change in an instant due to afternoon thunderstorms.

Work Environment:
The participant will work out of the Royal Gorge Field Office located in Canon City Colorado. The position will include approximately 90% computer/office and 10% field work. Canon City is a town of 15,000 people, with two larger cities approximately 35 miles away.

Qualifications:
The candidate should have a geology background, strong writing and editorial skills and proven background and general understanding of mineral uses and economics. Applicant must be professional, have strong work ethics and be able to work individually. Experience with computers and GIS is required. A government security background clearance will be required prior to starting this position.

Hourly Wage: $3,000

Housing Details:
The participant will be responsible for finding her/his own housing and will be given a housing allowance of $2,000 to cover the 12-week position, in addition to the stipend. Housing in the area is relatively inexpensive. A personal vehicle is recommended.
