Position Description:
{THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED AND IS NOT ACCEPTING NEW APPLICATIONS.} The Guest Scientist’s primary responsibilities will assist with ongoing projects relating to the field collection, stabilization, preparation, and curation of the paleontologic resources of the monument. Primary areas of emphasis for this position will be: preparing, conserving, and cataloging specimens of fossil leaves and insects in delicate shale; stabilizing the collection according to newly developed techniques and methods; continuing humidity chamber experiments previously begun by a previous intern; organizing “lot box” collections (specimens that are not individually cataloged); finalizing the FLFO Paleontology Lab Manual; coordinating the stabilization and cataloging of a collection from a new, small excavation during the summer; leading other interns who would assist in these projects; developing and presenting a portion of the Monument’s seasonal training; and developing and participating in virtual/interactive demonstrations for public outreach aspects. Other projects will include some of the following: inventory of collections; database entries; preparing educational information about paleontology for visitors; and assisting visiting researchers. The participant may have the option to use a portion of their time for research if they have a research plan defined and approved beforehand. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program and support from National Park Service project funding.
