Position Description:
[DEADLINE FOR THIS POSITION EXTENDED TO 3/29/15] The Geocorps participant will work in multiple Minerals Programs for the Royal Gorge Field Office (RGFO). Under the Locatable Minerals Program, the focus will be on the gold placer mining activity along the Arkansas River, as well as other areas along the Front Range of Colorado. There is a significant need to have more BLM visibility in these areas, in order to provide accurate information to the public regarding rules, regulations and resources, as well as conduct inspections to meet BLM regulatory enforcement protocol. Additional support is also needed with public inquiries involving mining claims and operations. Under the Salable Minerals Program, the BLM has requirements to conduct numerous inspections at quarries that are mining construction materials, such as sand and gravel. In addition, production verification at these sites is required. BLM RGFO has initiated a photogrammetry effort to address this requirement, as well as several potential trespasses in the Field Office area. This effort will be a primary focus of this position. Duties for both programs will include conducting inspections throughout the field office area, documentation of inspections, data entry, working with GIS and coordinating with various state agencies and members of the public. Additional duties may include providing geology/mineral information for various educational opportunities that BLM provides locally. This position will require a brief training by BLM personnel to become familiar with the applicable regulations and dynamics of mining that occurs in this area. This position will last for a minimum of 12 weeks (3 months), but there is potential for the project to be extended for additional weeks or months. If the project is extended, additional pay will be provided.

Goals, outcomes, and deliverables:
Inspection documentation, maps, maintaining a project list and successfully rolling out the photogrammetry effort for Salable Minerals.

Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.):
Oversight of the project will be provided by one of the project leads in the BLM Royal Gorge Field Office.

Professional development & learning opportunities: (trainings, certifications, networking, etc.):
All training required to perform the tasks required of the position will be provided through the BLM and/or partners.

Presenting Project Results:

Physical/Natural Environment:
The Royal Gorge Resource Area encompasses the eastern half of Colorado. The geology of the Resource Area ranges from the oil and gas producing formations of the high plains to hydrothermal gold deposits of Leadville. The terrain changes with the geology from flat grasslands to the steep, uneven terrain of the high mountains, but rolling hills with uneven terrain are dominant. Summer temperatures in Colorado can be very hot at lower elevations but conditions can change in an instant due to afternoon thunderstorms.

Work Environment:
The participant will work out of the Royal Gorge Field Office located in Canon City Colorado. The position will include approximately 50% computer and 50% field work and will require working with 2 BLM geologists but work will be mostly independent. Field work will require hiking up and down hills on uneven terrain in hot weather (up to 100°F). Canon City is a town of 15,000 people. Amenities include 2 grocery stores, a hospital, and several other businesses including hardware stores, bookstores, and several restaurants. The larger cities of Pueblo and Colorado Springs are each approximately 35 miles away and offer expanded amenities including a regional and an international airport.

Qualifications:
Experience with computers and GIS is required. Any background with mining and knowledge of photogrammetry is considered favorable. Applicant must be able to work in both a team environment and individually, as well as able to work with the public. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. A government security background clearance will be required prior to starting this position. Candidates with greater than 12 weeks of availability may be given preference, as there is a possibility this project may be extended.
