Public Land Name: Guadalupe Mountains National Park Position Title: Mapping Technician [Guest Scientist] Agency: NPS Position Type: GuestScientist Position ID Number: 2015622 Location: Salt Flat, TX Accepting Applications? # of current Applicants: 0 Position Description: APPLICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION ACCEPTED UNTIL JULY 14.
This position has two primary goals: 1) Refine the geologic mapping of
formations in the park using global positioning software (GPS) and,
2) update the digital geologic map using GPS data.
The geologic map used by the park was produced by P.B. King in 1948.
The mapping standards used at the time are not sufficient to meet today’s
needs for more accurate and precise placement of formation contacts. The
park needs specialized assistance to update the park’s geologic map using
modern concepts and techniques. Having a more accurate geologic map
will assist the park to more adequately tell the geologic story of the Middle
Permian and will enhance our ability to correctly place fossils recovered
from the rocks in the proper geologic context.
Additional Duties: Participant may also assist the park geologist with other
research projects or with performing geologic or paleontologic salvage
necessitated by trail maintenance work. Additional assignments may
include in-office management of collected specimens and related databases.
This position is offered through the National Park Service’s
Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program in partnership with the Geological
Society of America's GeoCorps America Program.
