Position Description:
The Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry (CLDQ) is a paleontological site containing the highest concentration of Jurassic-aged dinosaur bones ever found. It also has the largest collection of fossils of a large meat-eating dinosaur (Allosaurus fragilis) ever found, with at least 46 individuals discovered. Condition of the bone is generally excellent yet condition of the skeletons is anything but. And no satisfactory explanation has yet been proposed. Explaining that to visitors is the primary duty of the position. Other duties include light maintenance, some trail work, and a special project dependent upon the intersection of the intern's skills and the quarry's needs. This position is offered through the Geological Society of Americas's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management. It is likely that 2 positions will be filled under this description at this location during this season. Brochures, or facilitate and document screen washing for microfossils with visitors program, or assist and document work of paleontologists investigating the bonebed, or etc.

Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.):
Participant works closely with BLM staff initially, taking on more responsibilities as the term progresses.

Professional development & learning opportunities: (trainings, certifications, networking, etc.):
On the job training at the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry with opportunity to work with paleontologists from the UW/Oshkosh. Also opportunities to work with other paleontologists working in the Price Field Office such as folks from the Field Museum of Chicago, the North Carolina Museum of Science and Nature, and Price's own Prehistoric Museum.

Physical/Natural Environment:
The BLM Price Field Office is located on the northwest corner of the Colorado Plateau, and the northwest flank of the San Rafael Swell. The area is semi-arid, lies just under 6,000 feet above sea level, and has pinyon-juniper forested slopes and sagebrush/saltbrush flats.

Work Environment:
The Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry (CLDQ) has a recently renovated visitor center where most of the visitor contact will take place. Work on the bone deposit will take place within a Butler building erected over it. Temperatures will likely top 100 degrees F for at least several weeks in July.

Qualifications:
The applicant should have completed at least two years toward a degree in the geosciences, including at least one course in paleontology. The applicant must be able and willing to interact with visitors on a daily basis. Experience in geological interpretation is a plus. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.

Position Dates:
Starting mid-August (ideally) and continuing until mid-November. (Some flexibility)

Position Duration: 12 weeks

Hourly Wage: $3,000

Housing Details:
Free on-site housing is provided in the form of a camper-trailer. The selected participant should talk with the supervisor about what housing and work supplies to bring before they arrive on site. A personal vehicle is not necessary but would make days off a lot more enjoyable for participant.
