Position Description:
NEW POSITION; STARTS ASAP, PREFERABLY IN JUNE/JULY 2016, SO PLEASE APPLY ASAP.

The participant, under supervision, evaluates drainage and diligence cases. The participant will perform the necessary tasks - such as screening and analyzing well databases, completion reports, state spacing orders, producing formations, and mineral lease ownership status to evaluate drainage cases involving Federal fluid minerals. The participant will maintain digital fluid reservoir map files, prepare case files, determine drainage case resolution, and provide recommendations to determine the appropriate action in accordance with policies outlined in 43 CFR §3162.2 and the BLM Drainage Protection Handbook H-3160-2. The participant must be proficient in the use of ArcGIS and will be required to manage and manipulate a variety of land, mineral, and well data. Establishing and maintaining contacts with BLM field offices and New Mexico agencies involved in fluid minerals drainage will be part of the job duties. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management.

Goals, outcomes, and deliverables:
The participant serves as the technical assistant to the Geologist/Petroleum Engineer and is responsible for the preliminary identification, technical resolution, and documentation (via GIS maps and written reports) of potential fluid reservoir drainage issues relating to Federal and Indian mineral estates.

Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.):
New Mexico BLM has history of working successfully with GeoCorps positions. The participants will be working with state office petroleum engineers, state office natural resource specialists, and BLM minerals staff in various NM District and Field Offices. The participants will be considered a part of NM BLM State Office staff and are encouraged to network.

Professional development & learning opportunities: (trainings, certifications, networking, etc.):
Participants will learn about and be trained to use the BLM Automated Fluid Minerals Support System (AFMSS) as well as industry-specific databases and software such as IHS well and production data and IHS Petra. Participants would also be trained in BLM fluid minerals drainage policies and procedures.

Physical/Natural Environment:
The participant will be based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Santa Fe is a city of around 90,000 people. It sits at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at an elevation of 7,000 feet, in pinyon-juniper woodland. Summer temperatures are ordinarily in the 80s.

Work Environment:
The GeoCorps participant will be based in the New Mexico Bureau of Land Management State Office, and can expect to perform work in the office environment. Limited work (less than 10%) may occur in field environments, including remote locations. When in the office, the position is located in close proximity to a number of other professional employees, and the participant must tolerate an average amount of conversation, telephone, and other office distractions and background noise. Participant must have a valid driver's license and meet BLM's driver training requirements.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a degree in petroleum engineering, geology, or related field. Applicants must have good math skills, good verbal and written communication skills, and be self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period. This is not a database entry position - instead the applicant should have knowledge of database management, be able to migrate multiple database screens, and be able to review data in well databases per the BLM fluid minerals drainage program written guidance. The participant must have knowledge of the preparation of maps, plats, graphs, and technical reports and must be proficient in the use of ArcGIS and Microsoft Excel. Knowledge of advanced software such as Petra and petroleum well databases would be beneficial. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.

Hourly Wage: $404/wk

Housing Details:
Housing is not provided. There are a number of rental units within and near the city of Santa Fe.
