Position Description:
This project would directly support an effort to evaluate the viability of riparian restoration projects in Mesa Verde National Park in the context of projected environmental impacts from climate change. The participant would help collect and enter data on the current fluvial geomorphology condition related to habitat variables for several species including threatened, endangered, and sensitive plant, fish, bird, and mammal species within the Mancos River corridor within the park. The participant would also help summarize historical water flow data on the Mancos River through the park. This information would then be used by project staff and partners to evaluate current riparian health and condition, and help evaluate restoration options for reestablishing extirpated species and their habitat to the river corridor in the context of the effects from projected climate change scenarios. Based on the project’s needs and the participant's experience and interests, duties would include using a GPS, data forms, using fluvial geomorphology measurement tools, computer data entry, and GIS analysis. If needed, there will be opportunities for the participant to learn some of the above skills through in-house and on-line training. There will also be an opportunity for the participant to help finalize the data collection protocol. The participant will work with the park’s natural resources staff and use a data collection protocol designed by park staff and an NPS I&M hydrologist. The participant would be trained by project staff, but they would eventually be expected to collect and enter data independently. The final product will be presented to natural resource staff by the participant.
