Position Description:
The GeoCorps participant will perform as an Education Instructor for the Heart of the Rockies Education Program at Rocky Mountain National Park. The program is based upon Colorado Education Standards and is used by over 100 schools and 10,000 students per year. The program has an emphasis on the park’s geologic and glacial history. The participant will prepare education field activities for a variety of grade levels, primarily grades 3 – 8. Most programs will be hands-on field studies. The participant will also integrate existing lessons from the Heart of the Rockies teacher guides in both classroom and field settings. These lessons include the use of an existing geology trunk of portable materials. Classroom presentations occur in schools along the Front Range, but particularly in Denver, Fort Collins, and Estes Park. In-school presentations generally last about an hour or less. Field studies usually last 3 -5 hours and may occur in difficult weather conditions. The participant will also instruct prepared activities of ecology, history and other content areas. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) Program.
