Position Description:
Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument is a diverse Pliocene age site with fossils dating from approximately 4.0 to 3.1 million years in age. The Monument is best known for its horses, but Hagerman boasts a diverse paleofauna represented by amphibians, birds, fish, turtles, snakes, invertebrates, and a variety of mammals (e.g., rodents, rabbits, otters, peccaries, saber-toothed cats, camels, mastodons). Tens of thousands of fossils are housed on-site and rotating displays of our fossils are exhibited at the Visitor Center for the public to enjoy. The monument is essentially a ‘window into the Pliocene”. Research on the Hagerman Fossil Beds allows paleontologists, other scientists, park staff, and visitors to discover and understand evolutionary relationships, species distributions, environmental change, and animal behavior both at the site and elsewhere in the world. The internee’s job will be to help connect park science and education in meaningful ways to engage the public and aid in their understanding of science, with a focus on paleontology, geology, and ecology. One to two interpretation positions will be available for winter 2015/2016.
