Public Land Name: Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument Position Title: Paleontology Lab Assistant Agency: NPS Position Type: GeoCorps Position ID Number: 2015610 Location: Florissant, CO Accepting Applications? # of current Applicants: 0 Position Description: The GeoCorps participant will assist with ongoing projects relating to the geologic and paleontologic resources of the monument and related sites. Primary areas of emphasis for this position will be selected from some of the following projects based on the selected applicant's strengths, experience, and interests: develop content and activities for a kiosk and website utilizing interactive technology and other media to link the monument's paleontology program to the exhibit area; develop geologic site brochures; prepare, conserve, and catalog specimens of fossils in delicate shale; and develop a database and maps to document previous collecting sites. Other projects may include some of the following: inventory of collections; monitoring of fossil sites; database entries; preparing maps in GIS; and assisting visiting researchers. Specialized projects may be available for those having self-sufficient experience in photogrammetry or GIS, or those with a background in museum studies, fossil conservation, paleobotany, paleoentomology, paleoclimatology, or related fields. The participant may have an option to use a portion of their time for independent research if they have a research plan defined and approved beforehand. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
