Position Description:
A part of the National Park Service mission is to understand and protect paleontological resources, and to educate public and visitors about paleontological resources. The Alaskan Parks contain rocks with a complex tectonic history and a wide variety of rock types that date back into the Proterozoic. The remoteness of Alaskan Parks makes study of the geology difficult and costly, so in-depth knowledge of the paleontological resources contained in the Parks is sorely lacking. Alaskan Parks are starting a new project inventorying important and sensitive paleontological sites in various parks. To prepare for this project, the participant with help compile the information available about paleontological resources in the Alaskan Parks. The participant will assist with collecting and compiling paleontological resources information and populating a database. This work will consist of three parts: 1) Compiling paleontological information from published or unpublished reports; 2) Locating and digitizing paleontological sites from these reports; and 3) Entering paleontological information into a paleontological database. The participant will also conduct quality control of the information in the database. It is not expected that the participant complete the compilation of paleontological resources for all Alaskan parks, so the participant will work with NPS staff to decide which parks, or sections of parks to complete. The participant will help with documenting the fossils residing in the NPS Alaska Curatorial Center. This may include photographing specimens or using photogrammetry techniques to produce 3D models that will be used to share with researchers, presentations, reports, and for educational purposes. NOTE: Many university programs provide credit for geologic internships. The tuition fee for these credits will not be provided and it will be the responsibility for the student to register for the credits for the 2015 Fall semester. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the National Park Service's Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
