Position Description:
The GeoCorps participant will be responsible for assisting the Wildlife Conservation Branch (WCB) of the Biological Resources Division (BRD) within the NPS Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate (NRSS). NRSS is a Washington, DC Support Office, physically located in Fort Collins, CO about an hour north of Denver, CO. We provide technical assistance to parks across the country and also develop policy guidance and synthesize information on emerging conservation issues that affect multiple parks and regions. The Wildlife Conservation Branch works with a wide range of national and international wildlife entities towards the implementation of proactive, contemporary and sustainable solutions to complex wildlife issues essential to maintain long-term integrity, service and biodiversity of ecosystems. The participant will work on a variety of research, outreach, and program assistance tasks. These include technical support for a number of ongoing wildlife management projects in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act, such as elk and bison management at Great Sand Dunes National Park, mountain goat management at Olympic National Park, Tule elk management at Point Reyes National Seashore, wolf and moose management at Isle Royale National Park, and bison management at Grand Canyon National Park. In addition, the participant will support the annual Invasive Animals and Threatened and Endangered Species data calls that compile data from parks across the National Park System and may assist in other projects involving conservation of reptiles, amphibians, birds, and bats, as well as human dimensions aspects of management issues. Examples of work include helping to prepare technical reports, assistance with presentations including power point slides, literature reviews, statistical analyses, database management, and outreach materials. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps Program in partnership with the National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program.
