Position Description:
The job will be to assist the Royal Gorge Field Office's oil and gas program with various tasks. The candidate will work under the direction of the oil and gas NRS and petroleum engineer to assist with the following tasks, which include, but are not limited to: reviewing Application for Permit to Drill documents (surface use plan of operations, drilling plan ect.), assisting with and preparing NEPA documents related to permitting and other oil and gas related activities, assist with geological reviews for APD approval, collaborating with outside entities such as operators and other government agencies, field visits for predrill onsite meetings and environmental inspections, etc.. The candidate may use various computer programs such as ARC GIS, PETRA, AFFMSS, AFMSS2, COGCC website, etc. to accomplish tasks. The applicant must be able to work in both office and field settings.

Physical/Natural Environment:
The Royal Gorge Resource Area encompasses the eastern half of Colorado. The geology of the Resource Area ranges from the oil and gas producing formations of the high plains to hydrothermal gold deposits of Leadville. The terrain changes with the geology from flat grasslands to the steep, uneven terrain of the high mountains, but rolling hills with uneven terrain are dominant. Summer temperatures in Colorado can be very hot at lower elevations but conditions can change in an instant due to afternoon thunderstorms.

Work Environment:
The participant will work out of the Royal Gorge Field Office located in Canon City Colorado. The position will include approximately 50% computer and 50% field work and will require working with 2 BLM geologists but work will be mostly independent. Field work will require hiking up and down hills on uneven terrain in hot weather (up to 100°F). Canon City is a town of 15,000 people. Amenities include 2 grocery stores, a hospital, and several other businesses including hardware stores, bookstores, and several restaurants. The larger cities of Pueblo and Colorado Springs are each approximately 35 miles away and offer expanded amenities including a regional and an international airport.

Qualifications:
Applicants must be a student or graduate from a geological sciences, mining engineering, or related program. Some study in the subjects of stratigraphy/sedimentology, mineralogy, and basic chemistry is required. Previous experience or course work in geology and petroleum enginneering are desirable but not required, as are proficiency with Microsoft Access, PETRA, AFFMSS, AFMSS2, COGCC website. The successful applicant must be self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision after the initial training period. A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail is required. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.

August - October

Position Duration: 12 weeks/3 months. A guaranteed 3 month term, with possibilities of extending up to 1 year depending on availability of projects, funding, and supervision. Additional stipend and housing payments will be provided for time worked beyond the initial 3 months.

Hourly Wage: $4,848

Housing Details:
The participant will be responsible for finding her/his own housing.
