Position Description:
This is a part-time opportunity over the winter, and is intended for students at Chadron State College. The HMERC serves as an interpretive visitor center open to the public from Memorial Day weekend to the end of September. During the closed period for winter season until memorial day weekend the Interns will only work part time 20 hours per week. Intern may will need to drive out to Hudson-Meng site at least once a month depend on weather condition and schedule. Intern will be provided with work space at Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands Supervisor office if needed. Intern is expected to assist Hudson-Meng Site manager in designing and providing interpretive programs to the public on a variety of topics such as archaeology, history, paleoecology, and paleontology. Assist with development or revision of interpretive materials such as brochures, guidebooks, handout, and exhibits. Interns will also assist in the development of educational materials about Hudson-Meng and Toadstool Geologic Park for local K-12 schools. Provides orientation, interpretive, and regulatory information relating to site specific regulations, and other visitor activities. Assist with draft variety of written materials that include news release, articles, and website to increase understanding the significance of the Bison Bonebed. Attend and participate with special outreach event by explain the practices, goals, and objectives of the visitors center.

Goals, outcomes, and deliverables:
1) Assist with site manager develop new interpretive product include replacing signage, update lithic/geology display, and design new brochure. 2) Assist site manager with the educational App, Discovery Agent and have it available online by March. 3) Educate public about the site by staffing booths at special events, or at state and national park. 4) Conduct community and education outreach for summer 2017. The intern is expected to schedule at least 3 geological tours at Hudson-Meng visitor center. 5) Provide geological or archaeology theme interpretive private tour at Hudson-Meng visitor center upon request. 6) Lead interpretive tour on 3 miles Bison Trail link Hudson-Meng Visitor center to Toadstool Geologic Park upon request. 7) Assist site manager with updating several website pertains to HMERC. 8) The Intern may will need to work on weekend for private tours or outreach event as needed.

Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.):
Hudson-Meng Education and Research Center site manager will oversee all projects and work with intern through the projects. Site manager will also serve as mentor with Forest Archaeologist as back-up and will meet up with intern every week to review the work plan and progress. Intern will have opportunity to learn and strengthen work skills by work closely with site manager and forest archaeologists during winter season.

Professional development & learning opportunities: (trainings, certifications, networking, etc.):
Receive orientation and training include basic interpretive guide, which they will gain public communication skills. They would receive introduction to archaeology, history, natural resources, paleoecology, and paleontology of Oglala National Grasslands and Toadstool Geologic Park. Intern will receive safety training and other necessary training for projects they need to do essential job duties. Interns may get opportunity to meet and shadow US forest Service specialists such as range, wildlife biologist, paleontologist, or archaeologist. Learn how to contribute to Forest Service mission, “Caring for the Land and Serving People.”

Physical/Natural Environment:
Hudson-Meng Education and Research center is located in picturesque setting on Oglala National Grasslands in Crawford, Nebraska and about 1 hours’ drive from Chadron, NE. The Toadstool Geological park and campground is only hour and half drive away. Nebraska National Forest and Grassland Supervisor Office is located in Chadron, Ne and is about 5 minutes’ drive or 20 minutes’ walk from Chadron State Park.

Work Environment:
The position requires both office and outdoor work. Intern will spend majority of time working either at Nebraska National Forest and Grasslands Supervisor Office or at Chadron State College, and once in while at Hudson-Meng Visitor Center. The Supervisor Office is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. However, temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of outdoor work and at visitor center, periodically required such protective clothing as thick coat or jacket and boot for inclement weather. May be exposed to intense thunderstorms, wind, and snow, rugged terrain, biting insects, poisonous snakes, and spike and/or noxious plants.

Qualifications:
• Majoring in geology, anthropology, archaeology, paleontology, or history is preferred. • Previous experience in basic archaeology, anthropology, or geology field work preferred but not required. • Basic knowledge of public outreach and communication tools and techniques to identify audiences and messages. • Ability to work well independently with little supervision. Be able to resolves problem independently during course of the work. The supervisor will provide assistance in resolving problems that have unusual or unfamiliar conditions, methods, or concepts. • Ability to develops, prepare, and present programs for general public and special group. Those duties require ability to planning and coordination. • Research and checking the facts and instructions before using the information. Determine most appropriate information and materials for effectively informing the public. Ability to follow established guideline or verbal and written instruction from supervisor. • Work well as individual and with team. • Handle high stress situations well and provide excellent customer service. • Ability to stand for several hours, and hike 3 to 6 miles once every month. • Valid driver license.

Position Dates:
January 16 - May 12, part-time (20-24 hrs. per week)

Position Duration: 17 weeks (may extend to 24 weeks if participant is still in area for first part of summer

Hourly Wage: $10.10/hr

Housing Details:
The GeoCorps part-time intern position will be limited to Chadron State College students therefore housing will not be provided due to that they will be either living on Chadron State College campus or in house/apt off campus.
