Position Description:
1) The HMERC serves as an interpretive visitor center open to the public from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend with possible of extend until end of September. Interns will assist Forest Service personnel in staffing the center, in designing and providing interpretive programs to the public on a variety of topics such as archaeology, history, paleoecology, and paleontology. Assist with development or revision of interpretive materials such as guidebooks, handout, and exhibits. Interns will also assist in the development of educational materials about Hudson-Meng and Toadstool Geologic Park for local K-12 schools. Provides orientation, interpretive, and regulatory information relating to site specific regulations, hunting and fishing programs, and other visitor activities. Assist with draft variety of written materials that include news release, articles, correspondence, and event flyers designed to increase understanding of the Forest Service mission, encourage attendance at or assistance with special event, explain the practices, goals, and objectives of the visitors center. Performs routine daily opening and closing procedures, and assist with general office tasks and collects fees and bookstore sales. Perform routine maintenance/cleaning and landscaping.

Goals, outcomes, and deliverables:
• Develop interpretive tour script and materials. • Provides high quality customer service and tours to public. • Provides at least two special tours in addition to the normal scheduled tours to the public. • Manages all collections officer and partner association financial duties appropriately and timely. • Maintains visitor and program tracking forms and make sure all numbers are provided to the site manager during and at the end of the season. • Produce a Geologic theme educational lesson plan/activities for children and school tour. • Select and complete one research project pertain Hudson-Meng, Toadstool Geologic, or Oglala National Grassland. • Provide at least one geological theme hiking tour on Bison trail to Toadstool Geological Park. • Provide at least one Friday Night Talk and one Toadstool Campfire Chat that involves independent research. • Plan, and participate by staffing booths at special events, or at state and national park. • Complete all necessary trainings include defensive driving, collection officer, Civil rights, and workplace safety. • Maintain cleanness of site for visitors to enjoy.

Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.):
Hudson-Meng Education and Research Center site manager will oversee all projects and work with interns through the projects. Site Manager will assign park ranger as mentors to help direct day to day operation of site and assist with developing the designed intern-specific projects. Site manager and/or mentor will meet up with interns every week to review the work plan and progress. Interns will have opportunity to learn or strength team work skills by pairing up with volunteer or park rangers to develop one products.

Professional development & learning opportunities: (trainings, certifications, networking, etc.):
Receive orientation and training include basic interpretive guide, which they will gain public communication skills. They would receive introduction to archaeology, history, natural resources, paleoecology, and paleontology of Oglala National Grasslands and Toadstool Geologic Park. They will receive safety training and other necessary training for projects they need to do essential job duties. Interns may have opportunity to meet and shadow US forest Service specialists such as range, wildlife biologist, paleontologist, or archaeologist. Learn how to contribute to Forest Service mission, “Caring for the Land and Serving People.”

Physical/Natural Environment:
Hudson-Meng Education and Research center is located in picturesque setting on Oglala National Grasslands in Crawford, Nebraska. The Toadstool Geological park and campground is only 3 miles hiking or 15 minutes’ drive away. Nebraska National Forest and Grassland Supervisor office in Chadron, NE is at least hour drive away. There are several destinations nearby include Fort Robinson State Park in Crawford, Ne and Agate Fossil beds National Monument in Harrison, NE. The site is about hour away from South Dakota state line and about two hours and half away from Mt. Rushmore and Badlands National Monuments.

Work Environment:
The position requires both office and outdoor work. Interns will spend majority of time working at visitor center and once in while at Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands Supervisor’s Office. The visitor center is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. However, temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work, periodically requiring such protective clothing as raincoat or jacket for inclement weather. May be exposed to intense thunderstorms and wind, rugged terrain, biting insects, poisonous snakes, and spikes and/or noxious plants.

Qualifications:
• Majoring in geology, anthropology, archaeology, paleontology, history, or natural resources is preferred. • Previous experience in basic archaeology or anthropology preferred but not required. • Basic knowledge of diverse range of outdoor facilities and maintenance requirement such as trails, visitor center, campground, wayside exhibits, provide safe environment for visitors. • Basic knowledge of public outreach and communication tools and techniques to identify audiences and messages. • Ability to work well independently with little supervision. Be able to resolves problems independently during course of the work. The supervisor will provide assistance in resolving problems that have usual or unfamiliar conditions, methods, or concepts. • Ability to develops, prepare, and present programs for general public and special group. These duties require ability to planning and coordination. • Research and checking the facts and instructions before using the information. Determine most appropriate information and materials for effectively informing the public. • Ability to follow established guideline or verbal and written instruction from supervisor. • Work well as individual and with team. • Handle high stress situations well and provide excellent customer service to visitors daily. • Ability to stand for several hours, and/or hike 3 to 6 miles once every month. • Camping experience strongly preferred as you may camp at Hudson-Meng Research campground for 12 weeks unless you option to seek rental housing. • Valid driver license.

Vehicle / Driver's License Requirement (If applicable):
Valid driver license. Good driving record. Personal vehicle strongly recommended for transportation to housing and for errands (groceries and other essentials).

Position Dates:
June 5 – August 25

Position Duration: 12 weeks

Hourly Wage: $10.10/hr

Housing Details:
There are limited rental properties available in nearby towns - Crawford 22 miles, and Chadron 42 miles. Participants would pay for rental housing on their own, using a portion of their GeoCorps payments. Another option, at no cost to the participant, is using the dedicated research campground near the Hudson-Meng Education and Research Center (HMERC). The campground includes a modern bathrooms and showers, weatherport kitchen with two gas stoves, refrigerator and freezer, and portable water. Electrical outlets scattered throughout campground and available for use; campsite areas are undeveloped; RVs allowed in campground if within size limits (determined case-by-case); no water or sewer hookups available; on-site facilities available and designated as severe weather shelters; interested applicants are responsible for own camping equipment, meals, and transportation. Heavy duty tents and related outdoor gears is needed due to possible extreme thunderstorms and high winds.
