Position Description:
The GeoCorps participant will assist RGFO staff in compiling, editing and managing GIS data layers required for the management of public lands overseen by the RGFO and vital for analyses that will take place as part of the RGFO’s forthcoming resource management plan (RMP). This includes themes related to geologic and mineral resources, range resources, wildlife and wildlife habitat, recreation resources, and boundaries of the National Land Conservation System, to name a few. Work will consist of gathering and compiling existing GIS data, digitizing maps and records related to various themes, as well as verifying the accuracy and currency of exiting GIS layers. Some potential for database design, GIS modeling and GPS fieldwork exists. The participant will work independently with direction and technical support provided by RGFO GIS staff. This position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management.

Physical/Natural Environment:
The Royal Gorge Resource Area encompasses the eastern half of Colorado. The geology of the Resource Area ranges from the oil and gas producing formations of the high plains to hydrothermal gold deposits of Leadville. T

Work Environment:
The participant will work out of the Royal Gorge Field Office located in Canon City Colorado. The position will include approximately 95% computer and 5% field work and will require working with a BLM GIS specialist and with other BLM resource staff as needed.

Qualifications:
Participant must have, or be working towards a degree in geology, geography, environmental science or a related discipline with an emphasis or specialization in geographic information systems. Participant must have completed coursework or projects in GIS and demonstrate proficiency using the commonly available GIS mapping and data management tools (i.e. ArcMap, ArcCatalog). On the job experience using ArcGIS software is a plus. Prefer participant to have knowledge of geo-processing and GIS analysis concepts and tools, database design and management, and GPS data collection. Computer programming ability a plus.

Vehicle / Driver's License Requirement (If applicable):
Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. A personal vehicle will be required as there is no public transportation available in Canon City and there is limited housing within walking distance of the office.

Position Dates:
September 18 – December 8, 2017; 3 months minimum; start/end dates flexible.

Position Duration: 12 weeks A guaranteed 3 month term, with possibilities of extending up to 1 year depending on availability of projects, funding, and supervision.

Hourly Wage: $5,000

Housing Details:
