Position Description:
This project will involve two aspects of cave management for caves, karst and lava tubes in Region 5 of the Forest Service, being the 18 national forests in California. The person in this position will lead a Region-wide effort to enter caves and cave information and data into the national Forest Service secure Cave and Karst Database. This will entail 1) collecting existing data from caving club newsletters, existing databases, verbal information from California cave enthusiasts or other sources of data and 2) entering that data and information into the database. Training on the database will be provided and assistance and oversight will be provided for collection and management of the data. All data entered into the database is considered secure and is protected under the federal Cave and Karst Resources Protection Act. Caves with bat colonies will be prioritized due to concerns with White Nose Syndrome disease in bats. The database entry work will take up most of the time of the internship. The second aspect of the internship will be cave and karst field work in caves, primarily in northern California. Field work will include cave restoration and cleaning activities, cave mapping and survey or biological inventory work. Training will be provided for these activities. Note that caving is very physically demanding and the person in this position should be in excellent physical condition to enter and work within Forest Service caves. The person in the position will work with other Forest Service staff and also cavers throughout the internship. Cave data and information is often carefully protected by cavers and as such it will be important to work tactfully and in a very professional manner with cavers to demonstrate to them that the data will be well managed and secure. The person in this internship will be required to complete Forest Service training on several issues including federal network security, diversity in the workplace and other topics.

Goals, outcomes, and deliverables:
