Partial Description:
The paleontology intern will assist with paleontological resource inventory and monitoring at Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. The intern will work with park and Geologic Resource Division staff to systematically inventory fossil localities with the park to document the occurrence and condition of paleontological resources at each locality. Detailed documentation for each site, including photographs and GIS locality information, will be recorded to incorporate into a park paleontology database. Data obtained through this inventory project will inform park management regarding science, resource management, interpretation and other issues. Intern will assist with other Physical Science activities such as groundwater, night sky, and air quality monitoring up to 25% of their duties. Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is one of 17 Park units identified with paleontological resources in it's founding proclamation. This project serves to inventory this resource in greater detail, to aid manager decisions and policy compliance, but also to meet NPS agency mandate of natural resource protection. This position is offered through the National Park Service's Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) Internship Program in partnership with Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) and The Geological Society of America (GSA). Work Products: The intern will prepare a fossil locality report for each paleontological site documented. The information gained during fieldwork will also be entered into a spreadsheet for Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument fossil localities. The report and spreadsheet will include recommendations for long term preservation and monitoring of each fossil locality. Applicants should possess both education and experience in geology and paleontology, preferably with field experience identifying a variety of invertebrate fossils. Given the extensive amount of field work that is planned for the intended project, applicants with field experience and field methods training or field school are encouraged to apply. Experience with field mapping and GIS skills should be identified in the application. The ability to recognize and identify fossils in the field is important for this position. Additionally, the intern will be required to operate a government vehicle and perform field tasks independently much of the time. The intern should be proficient and diligent in field note taking and have good writing and communication skills. Finally, preference will be given to applicants with sufficient outdoor experience, especially hiking with gear in rugged terrain. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident (“green-card-holder”) between the ages of 18 and 30 inclusive, or a veteran up to 35 years old. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required.
