Position Description:
APPLY BY Monday, 17 August. The GeoCorps participant will work with the oil and gas program of the Royal Gorge Field Office (RGFO) in Cañon City, Colorado. The participant will work under the direction of the oil and gas natural resource specialist (NRS) and petroleum engineer on site. The participant will be responsible for the primary work functions listed below, and they will also support other natural resources staff. Primary responsibilities: • Assist in reviewing "Application for Permit to Drill" (APD) documents (surface use plan of operations, drilling plans, etc.) • Assist with and prepare National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents related to permitting and other oil and gas-related activities • Perform geological reviews for APD approval • Collaborate with outside entities such as operators and other governmental agencies • Field visits for pre-drill onsite meetings and environmental inspections, etc. • Apply the use of ArcGIS, PETRA, the BLM's online oil and gas drilling permit processing system (AFMSS), and the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) website to completing the responsibilities mentioned above. Additional responsibilities: • Enter data and write reports • Complete training requirements • Complete various administrative tasks This position will require office and field work. The participant may be required to complete up to a week of travel and overtime to support the projects needs. A successful candidate will have the ability to utilize GIS effectively and demonstrate good public relation skills/experience. The position is offered through the Geological Society of America's GeoCorps America Program in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management.

Goals, outcomes, and deliverables:
• Support for "Application for Permit to Drill" (APD) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents • Documentation from inspections and geological reviews • Map-based products using GIS tools

Agency involvement (project oversight, mentoring, team building, etc.):
Project mentors will work with the participant to guide their projects, introduce them to the work and mission of the BLM and other federal agencies, and broaden their network of professional contacts. The participant will have a high degree of autonomy over their work.

Professional development & learning opportunities: (trainings, certifications, networking, etc.):
This work will provide a challenging and meaningful experience to the participant. The participant will gain experience navigating a professional workforce, the opportunity to exhibit their technical skills and knowledge, apply these skills to current management challenges, and produce plans, data, and/or educational materials that will help direct the management of BLM properties. Participants will also have the opportunity to gain further training in technical skills related, and adjacent to, the field of their project. Many opportunities come up day-to-day that will be shared with the participant when possible. The participant will interact other BLM office staff and interns in different disciplines in this position.

Leadership Development:
The participant will participate in rigorous projects that focus skills and reveal the work qualities of the individual. The project provides the opportunity for the participant to develop or apply personal responsibility in their work. The rigorous schedule of the project helps develop project management skills. The participant will also work with multiple stakeholders in their project, which will help the participant develop/demonstrate communication skills, and experience navigating organizational hierarchies.

Presenting Project Results:
The participant may be asked to present the findings from their project to BLM staff near the conclusion of the position. Participant is also encouraged to present their results at a GSA Annual Meeting or GSA Section Meeting.

Physical/Natural Environment:
The geology of the Royal Gorge Field Office Area ranges from the oil and gas producing formations of the high plains to hydrothermal gold deposits of Leadville. The terrain changes with the geology from flat grasslands to the steep, uneven terrain of the high mountains, but rolling hills with uneven terrain are dominant. Summer temperatures in Colorado can be very hot at lower elevations and cool at higher elevations. Summer temperatures in Cañon City, CO range from an average high of 80° – 90° and a low of 50° - 60°. Conditions at all elevations can change in an instant due to afternoon thunderstorms.

Work Environment:
The participant will work out of the BLM offices in Cañon City, CO. This is a casual work environment where employees typically carry out field work related to their duties on a regular basis. The position will include approximately 75% office and 25% field work.

Qualifications:
• Recent graduate from either a Bachelors or Masters program • Ability and desire to work beyond the initial 12-week term for up to 52 weeks. The training for this position can be intense and lengthy, so being able to work for a longer period of time is much more advantageous to all parties. • Experience and/or objectives related to fluid minerals (oil and gas), or similar field • Educational background and/or experience in to fluid minerals (oil and gas), or similar field (helpful) • Experience with computers and GIS (required) • Background in GIS, file and document management (helpful) • Varied work experience (does not include positions in academia only; practical work experience helpful) • Ability to work in both a team environment and individually • Ability to work with the public • Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record • A government security background clearance will be required prior to starting this position

Please note many GeoCorps projects are in remote locations, where a vehicle is necessary or highly recommended for transportation and access to amenities (exceptions include the Washington, D.C. area, Alaska, and Hawaii).

Position Dates:
September 2020 - September 2021

Position Duration: Initial 12-week term, with anticipated extension up to 52 weeks

Hourly Wage: $15.00/hour

Housing Details:
The participant will be responsible for finding their own housing. A personal vehicle is recommended.
