In 1896, Florence Bascom became the first woman to be employed by the U.S. Geological Survey.
In the 1920s, J Harlen Bretz revealed that the Channeled Scablands in eastern Washington were caused
by massive flooding.
In 1935, Charles Francis Richter and Beno Gutenberg developed the Richter scale.
In the 1950s, Marie Tharp, Bruce Heezen, and Maurice Ewing mapped the ocean floor and
confirmed the existence of a mid-Atlantic ridge; Victor Vacquier discovered magnetic striping on
the seafloor; and Clair Cameron Patterson made the first reliable measurement of Earth’s age.
In the 1960s, Harry Hammond Hess, Robert S. Dietz, and J. Tuzo Wilson proposed
the concept of seafloor spreading, providing the framework
for the theory of plate tectonics.
